Approximate Deduction in Single Evidential Bodies
نویسنده
چکیده
Results on approximate deduction in the context of the calculus of evidence of Dempster-Shafer and the theory of interval probabilities are reported. Approximate conditional knowledge about the truth of conditional propositions was assumed available and expressed as sets of possible values (actually numeric intervals) of conditional probabil ities. Under different interpretations of this conditional knowledge, several formulas were produced to integrate unconditioned estimates (assumed given as sets of possible values of unconditioned probabilities) with conditional estimates. These formulas are discussed together with the compu tational characteristics of the methods derived from them. Of particular importance is one such evidence integration formulation, produced under a belief oriented interpretation, which incorporates both modus ponens and modus tollens inferential mecha nisms, allows integration of conditioned and unconditioned knowledge without resorting to iterative or sequential approximations, and produces elementary mass distributions as outputs using similar distributions as inputs.

Approximate Viscous Shock-Layer Analysis of Axisymmetric Bodies in Perfect Gas Hypersonic Flow
In this paper, an approximate axisymmetric method is developed which can reliably calculate fully viscous hypersonic flow over blunt-nosed bodies. In this method, a Maslen’s second-order pressure expression is used instead of the normal momentum equation. The combination of Maslen’s second-order pressure expression and viscous shock layer equations is developed to accurately and efficiently com...
متن کاملOn Bayesian Measures of Evidential Support: Theoretical and Empirical Issues*
Epistemologists and philosophers of science have often attempted to express formally the impact of a piece of evidence on the credibility of a hypothesis. In this paper we will focus on the Bayesian approach to evidential support. We will propose a new formal treatment of the notion of degree of confirmation and we will argue that it overcomes some limitations of the currently available approac...
متن کاملEvidential Paradigm and Intelligent Mathematical Text Processing
This paper presents the evidential paradigm of computer-supported mathematical assistance in “doing” mathematics and in reasoning activity. At present, the evidential paradigm is implemented in the form of System for Automated Deduction (SAD). The system is based on the methods of automated theorem proving and is intended for intelligent mathematical text processing. It proves mathematical theo...
متن کاملApproximate Reasoning for Contextual Databases
Contextual reasoning has been proposed as a tool for solving the problem of generality in AI and for effectively handling huge knowledge bases, while approximate reasoning has been developed to overcome the computational barrier of classical deduction. This paper combines these approaches to provide an intuitive representation of knowledge and an effective deduction. Its semantics and a tableau...
متن کاملPoincaré Paradox and Approximate Similarities
This is an extended abstract of the published paper “Approximate Similarity and Poincaré Paradox to be published in Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, 49, 2008”. The startin point is an observation by De Cock and Kerre, in which, in considering Poincaré paradox, one observes that the intuitive notion of “approximate similarity” cannot be adequately represented by the fuzzy equivalence relation...
